Sports and Artificial Intelligence

One of the sectors that is utilizing and driving the greatest development of artificial intelligence is certainly the sports industry: the amount of money involved in sports such as basketball, soccer, and American football allows teams to invest in technology. Especially in recent years, as sports have become increasingly reliant on data analysis, artificial intelligence has taken on an ever-more-important role.

The ability to gather information about athletes, perform predictive analyses, recognize complex patterns, prevent injuries, and support strategic decision-making has led to artificial intelligence playing an increasingly prominent role—alongside athletes and coaches, of course.

So let's take a look at some of the benefits of AI in sports.

Data Analysis and Performance Optimization

One of the main applications of AI in sports isdata analysis. Wearable sensors and monitoring devices allow athletes to collect a wide range of information about their performance, such as heart rate, speed, power, and much more. AI can then process this data to identify trends, pinpoint areas for improvement, and optimize training strategies to maximize performance.

Opponent Analysis and Game Strategy

In addition to improving athletes’ performance, AI can also be used to analyze opponents’ play and develop winning strategies. By analyzing data from past games, AI can identify opponents’ weaknesses, predict their movements, and suggest tactics to overcome them. This gives coaches and teams a significant competitive advantage on the field.

Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation

Injury prevention is essential for elite athletes, and AI is playing an increasingly important role in this area. Using advanced algorithms, AI can analyze athletes’ movement patterns and identify potential biomechanical issues that could lead to injuries. In addition, it can also develop personalized rehabilitation programs to help athletes recover more quickly from injuries they have already sustained.

Performance Analysis and Talent Scouting

AI not only helps athletes improve their performance, but it can also be used to identify new talent. By analyzing performance data from youth leagues and minor leagues, AI can identify athletes with exceptional potential and suggest personalized development plans for them. This is particularly useful for scouts from professional teams looking to recruit new talent.

These days, being the first to discover a talented young person can generate revenue amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Basketball and Soccer

The aspects discussed so far are precisely those that illustrate the application of AI in two of the world’s most popular and lucrative sports —soccer and basketball—with the Premier League and the NBA, respectively , making the largest investments.

In basketball, in particular, AI is used to analyze vast amounts of data on player performance, including points scored, rebounds, assists, and shooting percentages. This analysis helps coaches identify individual players’ strengths and weaknesses, as well as develop more effective game strategies.

In addition, using advanced machine learning algorithms, AI is able to predict individual player performance based on a range of factors, such as physical condition, opponents, and game context. These predictions enable coaches to make more informed decisions during games, such as managing playing time and making substitutions.

Finally, AI is used to analyze game footage in order to identify playing patterns, defensive and offensive strategies, and tactical errors, giving coaches a more detailed view of the dynamics of the game and areas where the team can improve.

In soccer, too, artificial intelligence is used to analyze match data—including ball possession, completed passes, shots on goal, and more—enabling teams to identify effective plays, defensive and offensive strategies, and make tactical decisions during games.

Using machine learning algorithms, AI is able to analyze performance data from youth teams and lower-level leagues to identify potential talent in the world of soccer.

In a sport like soccer, which is becoming increasingly tactical, AI is used to analyze the performance of opposing teams in order to identify weaknesses, recurring patterns of play, and tactical strategies. This analysis provides coaches with deeper insights into their opponents and helps them develop winning strategies for matches.

In both cases, the use of artificial intelligence leads to a better understanding of the game, better tactical decisions, and optimized performance for teams.

Conclusions

Sports, too, show us how artificial intelligence can significantly push the boundaries of our knowledge and analysis. It is a tool with enormous potential, not only in the world of sports.

At Viasky, we’re using it in various sectors: Some of our applications use AI to support business operations—from management to document handling—with the goal of streamlining processes, which can in turn have a positive impact on individual companies’ revenues. But that’s not all: we’ve also found interesting applications for AI in urban life, with new tools that enable municipalities and cities to analyze, predict, and resolve issues related to managing a wide range of areas, such as traffic and infrastructure.
