Duis aute irure dolor

But so that you may understand where all this error originates—from those who accuse pleasure and praise pain—I will lay the whole matter bare, and explain those very things that were declared by that inventor of truth and, as it were, architect of the blessed life. For no one seeks pleasure simply because it is pleasure—nor does anyone despise or flee from it—but because great pains follow those who do not know how to pursue pleasure with reason. Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself—simply because it is pain—or seeks to attain it; rather, there are times when such circumstances arise that one seeks great pleasure through labor and pain. For, to put it mildly, who among us would willingly undergo the laborious exercise of the body unless it were to yield some benefit? Who, then, would justly reproach someone who seeks to be in that pleasure—from which no trouble results—or someone who flees that pain because it yields no comparable pleasure?

For no one seeks pleasure for its own sake

Indeed, we both accuse and regard with just hatred those who, blinded by greed, fail to foresee the pains and hardships they will endure—those who are corrupted by the allure of present pleasures—and those who are equally at fault for abandoning their duties out of weakness of spirit, that is, the avoidance of labor and pain. And indeed, a clear and straightforward distinction can be made regarding these matters. For in our leisure time, when we are free to choose and nothing prevents us from doing what pleases us most, every pleasure must be embraced, and every pain must be rejected. However, in certain times—whether due to required duties or the necessities of life—it will often happen that pleasures must be rejected and hardships cannot be avoided. Therefore, the wise person must choose among these matters in such a way that, by rejecting certain pleasures, they may attain greater ones, or by enduring harsher pains, they may ward off even more severe ones.
