ChatGPT and Software Development

Everyone is talking about it: ChatGPT is the artificial intelligence software that, by drawing on data and information from the internet, is able to interact and converse with humans. Developed by the American company OpenAI, the software is the latest breakthrough in the field of artificial intelligence, sparking a great deal of curiosity, but also some criticism and skepticism.

In particular, the question is how ChatGPT could support certain jobs and to what extent it could replace them. Artificial intelligence, for example, could be useful in programming—but how?

Artificial intelligence—and more specifically, ChatGPT—can play a role in optimizing code and generating code based on specific requirements; it can assist in identifying and fixing bugs; and it can automate development processes (such as software testing, source code management, and compilation). Additionally, it can provide immediate and direct access to useful information.

This speeds up and simplifies the programmer's work. Syntax completion, error correction, and the actual writing of code allow the developer to focus on other aspects, thereby increasing productivity, improving code quality—in part by reducing errors—and saving valuable time.

In addition, to automate certain tasks and thereby streamline work, you can also integrate ChatGPT with other applications, such as advanced text editors, monitoring and analytics systems to track performance and correct errors in real time, and analytics or project management tools to plan tasks.

ChatGPT offers many advantages, but we are still a long way from it completely replacing human intelligence.

Generative AI is actually not a new concept for programmers, who have been able to use GitHub Copilot—which writes code based on natural language—for a year now. Furthermore, ChatGPT is just one of the tools that can assist developers in programming or building web applications (to name a few: Replit Ghostwriter; GitHub Copilot; MutableAI; Tabnine; Amazon CodeWhisperer). And when we consider that there are also other applications, such as Uizard.io, Mixo.io, and Durable.co, which allow users to create websites quickly, even without programming skills, we realize that ChatGPT is merely the latest development in AI programs and software and does not represent the ultimate solution.

The situation is the same as it was some time ago, when OpenAI's software was not yet known to the world: the question remains whether ChatGPT can truly replace a programmer.

To some extent, we have already answered this question: not entirely—"human" programmers are still essential.

Writing code using this technology exclusively could, in fact, lead to significant limitations in language and contextual understanding, as well as in data quality and security. Technical limitations, syntactic errors, disjointed chunks of code, and a lack of context: ChatGPT cannot do without human quality checks. Moreover, the issue becomes particularly tricky when a junior programmer uses this technology, as they risk becoming overly reliant on it, thereby stifling the development of their own knowledge and skills.

In conclusion, ChatGPT can certainly be a valuable tool for senior programmers, who can use it to speed up their work. However, this technology cannot replace them, because the accuracy of the code depends on the final review, which is still entirely done by humans.
